Lawmakers Call Balochistan Security Situation Alarming During Heated Assembly Session

QUETTA – Members of the Balochistan Assembly, including Provincial Minister Mir Sadiq Umrani, strongly criticized the worsening law and order situation in Balochistan during a heated assembly session on Thursday.

Speaking on a point of order, Mir Sadiq Umrani said the province’s security situation had become deeply alarming, claiming that even ministers and lawmakers were unable to travel safely to their own constituencies by road.

He stated that his residence had been targeted multiple times, including attacks on solar panels and threats demanding extortion money. He added that despite approaching the chief minister, interior minister, and inspector general of police, adequate security could not be ensured.

“If the government cannot protect its own ministers, then there is no point sitting in this assembly,” he remarked, warning that the province could move toward civil unrest if the situation remained unchecked.

The minister also criticized the closure of major highways linking Khuzdar, Zhob, and Naseerabad, saying many lawmakers are forced to travel through Karachi and Sukkur to reach their areas.

Responding to the remarks, Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai said that such statements from a government member amounted to a “charge sheet against the government.”

Provincial Interior Minister Mir Ziaullah Langove acknowledged that the law and order situation was not satisfactory but urged political parties to openly condemn militant organizations and terrorism.

Former Chief Minister Abdul Malik Baloch of the National Party stressed that Balochistan’s issues could only be resolved politically and through dialogue rather than force.

During the session, lawmakers also condemned the reported kidnapping of the Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor of University of Gwadar along with another individual. On the speaker’s request, all assembly members stood up to jointly condemn the incident.

The session also witnessed disorder and heated exchanges among lawmakers, with some members protesting over not being allowed to speak. At one point, quorum was pointed out, forcing the session to pause briefly before proceedings resumed later.
