WhatsApp Introduces 3 New Ad Features — But Private Chats Remain Untouched

San Francisco:WhatsApp is rolling out **three new advertising features** globally, aiming to enhance its business monetization strategy — but the company insists that **private chats and user privacy will remain intact**.

The updates, announced by **WhatsApp CEO Will Cathcart**, will not display ads in **private chats**, nor will they use message content for ad targeting. WhatsApp messages remain **end-to-end encrypted**, making them inaccessible even to Meta.

### **Here’s What’s Changing:**

1. **Ads Based on Location, Language & Channels Followed**
Users will start seeing **ad recommendations** based on their **region, app language**, and **channels they follow** on WhatsApp. Those who have linked their WhatsApp to **Facebook or Instagram** may receive more **personalized ads**, leveraging Meta’s broader ecosystem for **targeted advertising**.

2. **Ads in the ‘Updates’ Tab**
Ads will appear in a dedicated **“Updates” section**, accessible via a separate tab at the bottom of the app. Businesses with WhatsApp Channels will be able to **sponsor posts** in this section, allowing them to reach a broader audience.

3. **Status Ads Like Instagram Stories**
Companies will also be able to run ads through **WhatsApp Status updates**, resembling the format of **Instagram Stories** — a move designed to provide familiar ad placements without disrupting the chat experience.

### **Privacy First — But Users Are Wary**

Will Cathcart emphasized that these new features will **not interfere with the core messaging experience**. Users who don’t follow channels or engage with ads **won’t be affected**.

> “These updates are designed to support businesses and create new revenue streams without compromising user privacy,” he said.

Still, the announcement has sparked debate among privacy-conscious users and industry analysts. While Meta claims that WhatsApp’s core remains secure and ad-free for private conversations, **some users are concerned** that the platform may start to feel **too commercial** — especially those who joined WhatsApp for its **clean, ad-free, and secure communication**.

Critics argue that even though chats remain untouched, **the overall experience could shift**, affecting user trust in a platform once known for its simplicity and privacy.
