Alizeh Shah Sparks Controversy by Defending Bold Dressing with Religious Justification

Lahore – Pakistani actress Alizeh Shah has ignited a new wave of public outrage after defending her bold dressing choices by referencing her personal upbringing and even citing a Quranic verse. Despite widespread criticism from the public and social media users, the young star stood her ground, declaring that her clothing decisions are a matter of personal choice, not public judgment.
Alizeh Shah, who rose to fame with her debut in the 2018 drama Ishq Tamasha and won the “Best TV Sensation” award from Hum TV, has since been in the spotlight more for her dressing and public statements than her acting work. Her recent Instagram story, however, has stirred fresh controversy.
In a lengthy post, Alizeh responded to critics by saying she was raised in an environment where wearing sleeveless clothes, shorts, and skirts was not considered inappropriate. “Let’s get one thing straight: I have worn sleeveless clothes, shorts, and skirts since childhood. That’s how I was brought up,” she wrote. “My mother never forced old-fashioned beliefs on me. She raised me with love, not restrictions.”
She went on to express her frustration at the backlash, stating, “I’ve worn these clothes before without asking anyone’s permission. So why the threats and mockery now? Just because I’m telling the truth? Or because I don’t meet your expectations?”
Alizeh emphasized that the issue was not clothing, but control: “This is not about clothes, it’s about control. I am not here to become someone’s ‘acceptable’ version of a woman. Everything I have achieved is through my own hard work, and I don’t need anyone’s approval.”
Towards the end of her note, she criticized the culture of online shaming and double standards. “If you think women are doing something wrong online, then watching actresses or influencers is just as problematic. Islam teaches us to look at our own actions before judging others.”
She concluded her statement with a reference to a verse from the Quran (2:256): “There is no compulsion in religion.” According to her, personal choices and faith are individual matters and not to be dictated by societal pressures.
The reaction from the public was swift and intense. Many users took to social media to express their disapproval, with one user commenting, “She’s always been like this. My sister used to teach at her school. But becoming famous and undressing is not an achievement.”
While some supported her stance on personal freedom, a significant number criticized her for misusing religious texts to justify actions that many consider culturally and religiously inappropriate.
The debate continues as Alizeh Shah becomes yet another figure at the center of the ongoing discussion in Pakistan around fame, freedom, and faith.
