Gunman Killed After Opening Fire Near White House Checkpoint, Lockdown Briefly Imposed

Washington: A heavily armed man was killed in an exchange of fire with security personnel after opening fire near a checkpoint close to the White House, according to US media reports.
The suspect, identified as Nesire Best from the state of Maryland, was shot dead by security officers after he allegedly fired multiple rounds near the White House complex.
American media reported that the suspect had a history of mental health issues and had previously confronted Secret Service personnel.
A bystander who was injured during the exchange of fire later died from injuries, while no security officials were reported hurt in the incident.
According to reports, the shooting took place at around 6pm local time, prompting an immediate lockdown of the White House complex. The lockdown was later lifted after the area was secured.
US media outlets reported that President Donald Trump was believed to be inside the White House at the time of the shooting, although no official confirmation was issued.
Several journalists present near the White House claimed that nearly 30 shots were fired during the incident. Following the shooting, snipers were deployed on the White House rooftop, while journalists gathered on the North Lawn were instructed to move into the press briefing room for safety.
Reporters from multiple television networks, including ABC News, were broadcasting live when the gunfire erupted, and the sounds of the shots were captured on camera.
The incident comes just four weeks after another armed individual allegedly attempted to target President Trump during an event in Washington.
Reports also suggested that President Trump had planned to travel to the Bahamas to attend his son’s wedding, but chose to remain at the White House amid expectations of a possible breakthrough in the ongoing US-Iran negotiations.
