Quetta Residents Face Price Hike as Roti Reaches Rs40 Despite Cheaper Wheat; Authorities Accused of Failure in Price Control

Quetta: Residents of Quetta are facing severe inflation pressures as the price of roti has increased to Rs40 despite a decrease in wheat and flour prices, raising serious questions over the performance of the district administration in price control.
According to local reports, tandoor owners have raised the price of roti from Rs30 to Rs40 while allegedly reducing its weight significantly. Citizens say that although wheat prices have declined nationwide, the benefit has not been passed on to the general public.
The district administration has issued official price lists; however, bakers have reportedly ignored these directives, with authorities accused of failing to enforce the approved rates. As a result, roti is being sold at inflated prices across the city.
Residents further reported that double roti bread is being sold for up to Rs80, while basic food items continue to become increasingly unaffordable.
Criticism has also been directed at the administration for its inability to control profiteering and hoarding. Citizens alleged that officials are limited to issuing rate lists without taking effective action against violators, leaving consumers at the mercy of market forces.
In addition, meat prices have also increased sharply. Beef is reportedly being sold at Rs1,600 per kilogram, while mutton prices range between Rs2,300 and Rs2,500 per kilogram.
