Poor Planning and Lapses Put PIA’s Reputation at Risk, Warns Civil Aviation Authority

Islamabad: The reputation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has come under serious threat due to poor planning and administrative negligence, as the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has raised grave objections over the airline’s base maintenance operations and issued an official warning notice.

According to a letter from the Additional Director of Airworthiness—obtained by *Express News*—serious issues have emerged over the past eight months owing to weak oversight, inadequate planning, and negligence by the Chief Engineer of Base Maintenance.

The report highlighted a Level-1 violation in the cabin furnishing shop, unauthorized repairs of A320 landing gear actuators, and misuse of records and certifications. It also revealed that an unapproved jack was used on a Boeing 777 aircraft, a matter that has been verified through correspondence with Boeing.

The CAA warned that the current situation poses severe risks not only to aircraft safety and regulatory compliance but also to PIA’s overall credibility. The authority has directed the national airline to implement effective planning, strengthen monitoring, and take urgent corrective measures.
