Sugar Prices See Rs. 10 to 15 Per Kilogram Increase in Pakistan

Islamabad: The price of sugar has increased by Rs. 10 to 15 per kilogram, as speculators are once again driving the price hike. Futures trading has also seen an additional Rs. 8 per kilogram increase forecasted for January.
According to reports, stockists and hoarders are actively working to raise sugar prices further. The ex-mill rate has surged to Rs. 115-125 per kilogram, while small retailers are selling sugar for up to Rs. 150 per kilogram, reflecting an increase of Rs. 20 from previous prices.
Wholesale dealers have indicated that sugar’s price per kilogram will remain at Rs. 128 throughout December, with a potential rise to Rs. 133 in January, followed by an additional Rs. 10 per kilogram hike.
So far, only 183,000 tons of sugar have been produced by November, with daily production standing at 13,000 tons. However, the country’s daily consumption is between 18,000 to 20,000 tons, creating a significant gap between demand and supply. This imbalance is being cited as one of the major factors behind the price surge.
Experts warn that if the government does not address the issue promptly, the situation could escalate into a crisis.
