Quetta:Former Deputy Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar has expressed concerns over the approach towards Balochistan’s issues in Pakistan, stating that it is not merely a matter of deprivation but also of recognition. In an exclusive interview with V News, Kakar highlighted the challenges in communication between the government and Operation Resolve, asserting that the current operation is not akin to past ones that displaced local populations.
“When I was in government, many considered me powerless. Some used derogatory terms like ‘Koth Patli’ (powerless), but during crucial military meetings, not only was my voice heard but my opinions were also considered when they proved logical,” Kakar stated. He emphasized that the current government cannot assert that everything is controlled by the establishment, as forums exist for open discussions and where opinions are heard.
Kakar continued, “I still believe that elected governments are not insignificant or merely informed. There is a perception in the mainstream that Balochistan’s issues stem from lack of development and resources, but the issue is not one of deprivation but recognition.”
He pointed out two extreme viewpoints on the matter: one that harshly blames the state every time and sees the situation through the lens of military non-cooperation, and another that aligns with national political rhetoric and dismisses Balochistan. Kakar illustrated how individuals and political parties have shifted their stances over time, from condemning extremists a few years ago to now sympathizing with them.
