Federal Constitutional Court Postpones Local Government Elections in Quetta

Quetta:The Federal Constitutional Court has ordered the postponement of local government elections in Quetta following a petition filed by Senator Kamran Murtaza of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI).
The case was heard by a bench headed by Justice Amin-ud-Din. During the hearing, the court raised key questions regarding the decision to hold elections without basing them on the latest population census and without proper consultation with the provincial government.
The petition was initially filed by Quetta resident Abdul Qadir, whose request had earlier been dismissed by the Balochistan High Court. After the dismissal, the petitioner approached the Federal Constitutional Court. Advocate Kamran Murtaza represented the petitioner during the proceedings.
Justice Amin-ud-Din questioned why the new census data was not used for delimitation and election planning, and why the decision was taken without consulting the provincial authorities. The court observed that these issues required further legal scrutiny.
After hearing preliminary arguments, the court adjourned the case until the third week of January. In the meantime, it issued an order to postpone the local government elections in Quetta until the completion of further hearings and legal review.
The court has directed the relevant authorities to strictly comply with its orders.
