Uzma Bukhari Admits Mistake Over Controversial Remarks on Women’s Clothing

LAHORE: Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari has admitted her mistake after facing backlash over a controversial remark regarding women’s clothing.

During a recent press conference, Bukhari had commented on the criticism surrounding women’s attire, saying: *“I am a woman, and I know the difficulties women face when it comes to clothing.”* She went on to state that those criticizing Maryam Nawaz’s clothing should “look at their own households, where even their mothers don’t consider it appropriate to wear certain clothes.”

Speaking on Shahzeb Khanzada’s show, Uzma Bukhari acknowledged her error and expressed regret. *“I am deeply hurt that such words came out of my mouth, but they were spoken in a moment of pain. Please try to understand my situation. Isn’t Maryam Nawaz someone’s mother or sister? I am also a mother, but the trolling we face from head to toe often tests our patience.”*

The Information Minister stressed that women leaders of the PML-N are routinely targeted through organized campaigns, particularly Maryam Nawaz, whose clothing often becomes the subject of criticism instead of her political work.

Bukhari added that recently, when Maryam Nawaz visited Shahdara by boat, an online campaign was launched to mock her instead of discussing her contributions to Punjab. *“Why is there always a need to talk about women’s clothing rather than their efforts and achievements?”* she questioned.
