Is It Better to Give Zakat to One Person or Distribute It Among Several?

Question:** Can the full amount of Zakat be given to one individual, or is it preferable to distribute it among multiple recipients?
**Answer:**
The one giving Zakat has the choice either to give the entire amount to a single deserving person or to distribute it among several eligible recipients. Both options are permissible in Islamic law.
However, it is considered *makruh* (disliked) to give such a large amount to one eligible person—without genuine need—that the person becomes *sahib-e-nisab* (possessor of the minimum wealth threshold liable for Zakat). Nevertheless, even if a deserving person is given a lump sum that makes them sahib-e-nisab, the obligation of Zakat is still fulfilled.
As for what is more virtuous, it depends on the circumstances and the individuals involved. For example, if a particular person has greater financial need—due to a large family, heavy expenses, or outstanding debts—and the full Zakat amount would be utilized in meeting those needs, then giving the entire amount to that one person is preferable, as it effectively resolves their hardship.
On the other hand, if the full Zakat amount exceeds the needs of one individual, then distributing it among multiple deserving people is preferable so that the needs of several individuals can be fulfilled.
