“Opposition Disrupts National Assembly Session as Minister Criticizes PTI and Defends Legislation”

Islamabad:In a heated session of the National Assembly, Federal Minister for Law, Azam Nazeer Tarar, lashed out at the opposition, particularly Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), while defending recent legislation and government actions. The opposition members, in response, disrupted the session, chanting slogans such as “chor chor” (thieves).
Addressing the assembly, Azam Nazeer Tarar expressed his disappointment that the human rights motions being debated were not focused on constructive suggestions. He argued that the discussions had been politicized and diverted from the subject of human rights. Tarar pointed out that the opposition had failed to address the laws the government had implemented and had instead turned the issue into a political football.
He also discussed the matter of standing committees, clarifying that they were not established to grant bail to individuals. “The standing committees have no authority over police investigations. They were not set up to grant bail,” he stated. He emphasized that the ministry had no power to forgive cases related to the events of May 9, a reference to ongoing political unrest involving PTI.
The Law Minister also highlighted the existence of three or four commissions under the Ministry of Human Rights but faced further disruption from opposition lawmakers who raised objections. Amid the protests, the assembly approved over 1.74 billion rupees in funding for the Human Rights Division.
The opposition’s motions for budget cuts, totaling 96 in number, were overwhelmingly rejected through a majority vote.
This session further underscored the ongoing tensions between the ruling coalition and opposition parties, especially concerning the handling of cases linked to the May 9 incidents.
