Malaysian Football Legend Datuk Alif Marries at 72
KUALA LUMPUR:Malaysian football legend Datuk Abah Alif has married at the age of 72, more than four decades after stepping away from professional football.
According to foreign media reports, Datuk Abah Alif married a woman nearly 50 years younger than him on August 27. The marriage was confirmed by his younger brother, Datuk Yunus Alif, who is also a former national footballer and coach.
Reports say that Datuk Abah Alif’s wife is 20 years old. Pictures of the football legend and his young bride have gone viral on social media, making the marriage a major topic of public attention.
Yunus said the marriage took place with the consent of both families. “We pray that both of them remain happy,” he said.
According to Yunus, his brother may currently be on his honeymoon, which could explain why he has not been answering phone calls. However, he confirmed that the couple had married and expressed his best wishes for them.
Datuk Abah Alif holds a prominent place in Malaysian football history, particularly for his contribution during the national team’s golden era in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
He was part of the Malaysian team that defeated South Korea 2-1 in a decisive qualifying match to secure qualification for the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
However, his dream of competing in the Olympics was never fulfilled. Malaysia boycotted the 1980 Moscow Games in protest against the Soviet Union’s invasion of Afghanistan.
