Over 100 Earthquakes Recorded in Greece’s Waters in 24 Hours, Major Quake Feared

ATHENS:In a shocking seismic event, more than 100 earthquakes were recorded within 24 hours in the maritime regions of Greece, with the strongest tremors reaching a magnitude of 4.9. Experts have raised concerns about the possibility of a larger earthquake in the coming days. As a result of these frequent tremors, evacuations have begun from the Greek islands.
**Why Do Earthquakes Occur?**
Experts explain that the Earth’s crust is made up of three large tectonic plates: the Eurasian Plate, the Indian Plate, and the Arabian Plate. When heat accumulates beneath the Earth’s surface, these plates begin to shift. This movement of the plates causes the Earth to shake, which is what we recognize as an earthquake.
Earthquake waves spread in circular patterns across the Earth’s surface. According to specialists, once a significant earthquake occurs in a particular area, there is a higher likelihood that another large earthquake may follow.
Earthquakes happen due to the sudden release of energy from within the Earth’s crust, which often manifests as volcanic lava on the surface. Most earthquakes occur in fault zones, where tectonic plates collide or slide against each other. Though the effects of these movements may not always be felt on the surface, they generate intense pressure between the plates. When this pressure is suddenly released, it results in the violent shaking of the Earth’s surface, known as seismic waves or earthquakes.
