Classes Halted Despite Fee Hike at University of Balochistan, Students Demand Action

Quetta:Despite a significant hike in fees for academics, library, research, hostel, and transport services, the University of Balochistan has failed to commence new semester classes. Academic departments remain locked, and essential student services like hostels and transport are still non-operational.
Students have strongly criticized the administration, accusing the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of negligence and anti-student behavior. In a recent meeting of Heads of Departments (HoDs) chaired by the Vice Chancellor, no decision was made regarding the reopening of hostels or the restoration of transport services, even though all schools and colleges in Quetta are fully functional.
Students questioned the rationale behind charging high fees when classes are not being held. “If this continues, it makes more sense to pursue BS degrees in colleges where education is affordable and uninterrupted,” said a student representative.
They further stated that the current situation reflects poor planning, leading a once-prestigious institution to the brink of collapse. Where once thousands of students pursued BS programs and hundreds engaged in MPhil and PhD research, the university is now struggling to even complete admissions in multiple departments — highlighting a serious administrative and moral crisis.
Students have appealed to the Balochistan High Court, the Chancellor and Governor of Balochistan Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhail, and Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti to launch an immediate inquiry and take strict disciplinary action against those responsible for the university’s deteriorating state.
