The renowned Pakistani Qawwal, Amjad Sabri, was tragically killed in June 2016 in Karachi, after which his family left the city. Now, his son, Mujaddid Sabri, has revealed the reasons behind their decision to leave.
In a TV interview, Mujaddid explained that the media’s inappropriate questions following his father’s murder played a significant role in his family’s decision to temporarily leave Karachi. While the public offered sympathy and visited their home, the media’s behavior was unacceptable. Mujaddid shared that media outlets not only invited his family to appear on TV channels but also parked their OB vans outside their house constantly.
From 2016 to 2017, Mujaddid stated, there was no day when the media did not approach them for an interview or show. This constant media pressure and strange, insensitive questions led the family to temporarily relocate to Lahore. Mujaddid recalled one incident where a reporter asked him if he missed his father, to which he replied with a series of questions, asking the reporter if he had lost his own father and how he would feel if someone asked him the same question after his father’s death.
Amjad Sabri, a legendary qawwal, was shot dead on June 22, 2016, in the Liaquatabad area of Karachi. He was the son of the famous Sabri Brothers’ patriarch, Ghulam Farid Sabri. Amjad’s son, Mujaddid Sabri, is the eldest of his siblings and is not married. Despite having 11 siblings, Mujaddid is the only one who continued the qawwali legacy of his father.
