Quetta Private Hospitals Accused of Overcharging Patients, Public Demands Government Action

QUETTA: Private hospitals in various parts of Quetta have come under criticism over alleged arbitrary increases in doctors’ consultation fees and charges for medical tests and medicines, with citizens accusing hospital administrations of exploiting patients.
Residents and public circles said the number of private hospitals in the provincial capital has increased rapidly, but many facilities allegedly lack adequate parking and other basic amenities, adding to traffic congestion and creating further difficulties for patients and their families.
According to citizens, doctors who previously charged around Rs800 for a consultation are now reportedly charging between Rs2,000 and Rs4,000. They also alleged that patients are being charged heavily for various diagnostic tests and medicines.
Public representatives and citizens urged the Balochistan government, particularly Health Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar, to take immediate notice of the situation and conduct inspections of private hospitals across the city.
They called for measures to regulate doctors’ consultation fees and charges for medical tests and medicines, while also ensuring that private hospitals provide adequate parking and basic facilities for patients and visitors.
The public also expressed concern over the condition of government hospitals, alleging that despite receiving substantial public funds, many state-run hospitals continue to face shortages and inadequate services.
Citizens demanded that the health department improve services at government hospitals while simultaneously monitoring private healthcare facilities to prevent patients from being subjected to excessive charges.
Public circles warned that if the government failed to address their concerns and take action against private hospitals allegedly overcharging patients, they would be compelled to launch protests against the facilities.
