29 Killed in Roof Collapse Incidents During Monsoon Rains in Lahore Over One Month
LAHORE: Monsoon rains have turned deadly for residents of Lahore, where 29 people have lost their lives in four major roof collapse incidents over the past month, while several others sustained injuries. The district administration has intensified monitoring of dilapidated and dangerous buildings and urged citizens to take precautionary measures during the ongoing rainy season.
The latest tragedy occurred on Wednesday night in Kotli Pir Abdul Rehman, Baghbanpura, where the roof of a three-storey house collapsed, killing 11 people and injuring six others.
According to the district administration, a birthday celebration was underway on the house’s T-iron girder roof when it suddenly gave way, trapping those present under the debris. Rescue teams launched an operation and shifted the deceased and injured to nearby hospitals.
Earlier, on July 27, three people were injured when the roof of a mud house collapsed due to heavy rainfall in Pathan Colony on Shalimar Road.
On July 25, a dilapidated roof collapsed in Railway Colony, Garhi Shahu, claiming the lives of a husband, wife, and their daughter, while another young girl was injured.
On July 2, the roof of an under-construction section of a private school collapsed in Baghbanpura during expansion work, killing one child and injuring four others, including laborers and passersby.
One of the deadliest incidents occurred on June 30 in the Kahna area, where the roof of a private tuition center collapsed, killing 14 children and injuring eight others, including a female teacher.
Rescue 1122 and the district administration have advised residents to avoid old, dilapidated, and structurally unsafe buildings during heavy rainfall to prevent further loss of life.
Officials said an immediate survey of dangerous and deteriorating structures across Lahore is underway. Property owners have been directed to take necessary safety measures, while residents of unsafe buildings are being advised to relocate to secure locations.
