Shoaib Malik Calls for Major Domestic Reforms to Revive Pakistan Test Cricket

Karachi: Former Pakistan national cricket team captain Shoaib Malik has proposed major reforms in Pakistan’s domestic red-ball structure to improve the declining standard of Test cricket in the country.
Reacting to Pakistan’s recent disappointing performances in Test cricket, Shoaib Malik stressed the need to financially support red-ball specialists through better central contracts and incentives. He shared his views on social media platform X, saying that authorities should prioritize players dedicated to the longer format of the game.
The former all-rounder, who represented Pakistan in 287 One Day Internationals, 35 Tests, and 124 T20 Internationals, said financial security would encourage players to remain committed to first-class cricket instead of shifting their focus toward franchise leagues.
Malik said Pakistan must offer attractive red-ball contracts to strengthen Test cricket and ensure that specialist players remain associated with the longer format.
He further explained that such incentives would require players to participate in at least five first-class matches every season while also protecting them from changing their natural playing style under the pressure of franchise cricket.
Emphasizing the importance of raising standards at the international level, Malik said there is a clear difference between the demands of domestic and international cricket.
“You cannot succeed internationally with half preparation. We need fully prepared and committed players,” he stated.
Malik’s suggestions came after Shan Masood-led Pakistan suffered a 2-0 Test series whitewash against the Bangladesh national cricket team.
