Sunrisers Leeds Signing of Abrar Ahmed Sparks Controversy in Indian Media

Abrar Ahmed’s signing by the Indian-owned franchise Sunrisers Leeds for £190,000 in the The Hundred has drawn sharp criticism from sections of the Indian media, including remarks from former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar.
In a column for an Indian newspaper, Gavaskar controversially claimed that the fee received by Abrar Ahmed could indirectly contribute to military spending in Pakistan. He suggested that taxes paid from the player’s earnings might be used by the Pakistani government to purchase weapons, which, he argued, could be used against Indian soldiers and civilians.
The remarks have stirred debate, highlighting how sports signings can become politicized in the region. The controversy underscores ongoing sensitivities between the two countries, even in the context of international cricket leagues.
No official response from Abrar Ahmed or the franchise has been reported yet regarding the criticism.
