Court Orders Registration of Appeals by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in Toshakhana-II Case

Islamabad: The Islamabad High Court has directed the registrar’s office to assign numbers to the appeals filed by Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi against their conviction in the Toshakhana-II case.
The hearing was conducted by Justice Khadim Hussain Somroo. During the proceedings, the couple’s lawyer, Salman Safdar, appeared before the court. Also present in the courtroom were Khan’s sister Aleema Khan, along with lawyers Salman Akram Raja and Intizar Panjotha.
During the hearing, Barrister Salman Safdar informed the court that the registrar’s office had raised objections, including claims that the appeals were not filed on time, and requested that these objections be removed. He said he had hoped some relief would be granted during the holy month of Ramadan and added that he had recently met the Chief Justice after a long time, who assured him that genuine issues would be addressed.
Safdar also told the court that he had not been receiving power-of-attorney documents for some time despite representing around 300 cases, adding that the superintendent of Adiala Jail had not been providing signed documents.
Justice Somroo remarked that a power of attorney is not necessary for filing an appeal and told the lawyer not to “kneel down,” noting that judges themselves had spent 21 years on the other side of the legal profession.
After hearing the arguments, the court removed the registrar office’s objections and ordered that the appeals filed by Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi be formally registered and assigned numbers.
