Punjab Government Introduces QR Code for Weapon License Verification to Curb Fake Licenses

The Punjab Home Department has announced a significant move to enhance the transparency of the weapon license verification process by introducing QR codes. This decision comes after concerns were raised about the circulation of fake weapon licenses, with reports of promotions seen on social media, suggesting that some individuals might be creating counterfeit weapon license cards.

The Punjab Home Secretary, Noor Alam Mengal, chaired an important meeting on weapon license verification, where it was decided that every weapon license would now be issued with a unique QR code. This QR code will allow law enforcement agencies to verify the details of a weapon license by simply scanning the code.

The Home Secretary has instructed NADRA (National Database and Registration Authority) to issue QR codes for all weapon licenses and to ensure the online verification of these licenses. The process is expected to be completed within a week. NADRA has been directed to link each license to the individual’s national identity card.

Additionally, the provincial commissioners and deputy commissioners have been instructed to include QR codes on all weapon license orders issued in the region. The use of QR codes will ensure that law enforcement agencies can easily verify the authenticity of weapon licenses, reducing the circulation of fake licenses.

Home Secretary Mengal emphasized that individuals involved in serious crimes would be ineligible for obtaining weapon licenses. A thorough screening process will be implemented to ensure that no person involved in criminal activities can acquire a weapon license.

The Punjab government is also making amendments to the Arms Rules to facilitate citizens and streamline the process of obtaining both individual and business weapon licenses. Furthermore, the department is working on the computerization of manual licenses to improve monitoring and oversight.

In a move to further simplify the process, the Home Secretary mentioned that a revised fee schedule for weapon license applications and renewals has been recommended. With the introduction of QR codes, it is expected that individuals will be able to access their weapon license details through a unique code, making the process of verification and management more efficient.
