Islamabad University Incident: Military Officer Taken Into Custody After Firing, Inquiry Initiated
ISLAMABAD: A military officer has reportedly been taken into custody by the relevant military authorities and an inquiry has been launched following an alleged firing incident and disturbance at a university in Islamabad.
According to senior journalist and anchorperson Hamid Mir, the incident occurred after a close female relative of the military officer was allegedly mistreated at a local university. The woman reportedly contacted the officer, who arrived at the university, after which a dispute and commotion broke out on the premises.
Mir said the relevant military institution took immediate notice of the incident and placed the officer in custody. A formal inquiry has also been initiated, while legal and disciplinary action may be taken if violations of military discipline and regulations are established.
Journalist Tariq Mateen said that, after contacting the university, he was informed that the woman accompanying the officer worked at the institution and had been involved in a dispute with a staff member. He said the dispute had reportedly continued for more than a month before escalating on Monday.

Mateen further claimed that footage of the incident showed the officer attempting to fire a shot before subsequently firing into the air. He said the initial attempt reportedly failed, adding that a successful shot could have resulted in serious consequences.
According to Mateen, written military regulations prohibit personnel from carrying weapons in such a manner at public places. He said disciplinary proceedings against the officer had already been initiated.
A former military officer, commenting on the incident, said it would be difficult for the officer to remain in service if the allegations were established. He referred to a 2019 incident in Dera Ismail Khan involving a major who was reportedly dismissed from service following an allegation of assaulting a child.
The authorities are expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the officer’s conduct through the ongoing inquiry.
