Australia Captain Pat Cummins Withdraws from T20 World Cup, Cites Gruelling 18-Month Schedule

Australian Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins has revealed that his desire to play the maximum number of Test matches in an extremely busy 18-month schedule was the main reason behind his decision to withdraw from the upcoming T20 World Cup.
According to Cricket Australia, Cummins said, “I feel fine, but missing the World Cup is really unfortunate. After the Adelaide Test, we expected a 4–8 week recovery period, but following a fresh scan, doctors advised additional rest.”
Cummins, who has been dealing with a back injury, explained that Australia’s schedule from August onwards is exceptionally demanding. It includes home Tests against Bangladesh, a tour of South Africa, a series against New Zealand, a five-Test tour to India in 2027, the Ashes, the ODI World Cup, and potentially the World Test Championship final.
He added, “I didn’t want to spend the next 18 months chasing injuries. If I don’t take precautions now, it could create bigger problems later.”
Australia recently suffered a 3–0 defeat against Pakistan in a T20 series, in which Cummins did not participate. He will also miss the ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India.
Fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis has been named as Cummins’ replacement in the Australian squad for the tournament.
