Birmingham – Pakistan cricket’s downward spiral continued under Mohsin Naqvi’s tenure as England completed a clean sweep against Pakistan in a Test series on English soil for the first time in 74 years.
On the fourth day of the match being played in Birmingham, Pakistan made an aggressive start, sending both English openers back to the pavilion in the very first over. Chasing a target of 130 runs, England began their innings with Ben Duckett dismissed on the very first ball, and Emilio Gay out on the last ball of the same over without scoring a single run.
At a total score of 35, captain Joe Root was bowled by Mohammad Ali, but a no-ball gave him a new lease on life. At a total of 54, Root got another reprieve when an edge off Mohammad Abbas’s delivery passed between first and second slip, and the fielders stationed at slip did not even attempt to take the catch.
Subsequently, Root, along with Jordan Cox, led England to victory. Jordan Cox scored 59, while captain Joe Root played an unbeaten innings of 62 runs to guide the team to victory. England achieved the target at the loss of just 2 wickets, and Pakistan suffered an 8-wicket defeat. With this victory, England whitewashed Pakistan in a home series for the first time.
