Social Media Platform X Under Investigation in France for Data Manipulation and Fraud

Paris – Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has come under fresh legal scrutiny as French prosecutors have launched a formal investigation into allegations of data manipulation and fraud on the platform.
According to French authorities, the probe is being conducted by the country’s cybercrime unit operating under the investigative agency named Genderméri. The investigation focuses on two major accusations: systematic alteration of data through automated systems, and the illegal extraction of data using the same systems.
The inquiry began in January this year after two whistleblowers — one a member of the French Parliament and the other a senior official from a key government agency — provided crucial information to the cybercrime unit. While their identities remain confidential, they claim that X’s algorithm may have been exploited for external interference.
If proven, these allegations could lead to serious consequences not only for the platform owned by Elon Musk but may also impact regulatory frameworks governing digital platforms worldwide. The case highlights growing concerns over transparency, data integrity, and the ethical use of automated technologies in social media.
