Passenger Ship Carrying 243 People Goes Missing in Indonesia
JAKARTA:A passenger ship carrying 243 people has gone missing while travelling through the Java Sea in Indonesia, according to foreign media reports.
The vessel was travelling from Surabaya, East Java, to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan on the island of Borneo when communication with authorities was lost.
According to reports, 243 people were on board the ship. So far, 103 passengers have been rescued, while one death has been confirmed.
The Indonesian Search and Rescue Office said the vessel’s last known position was in the Java Sea, approximately 148 kilometres from a port in Banjarmasin. A search and rescue operation has been launched to locate the missing vessel and those still unaccounted for.
Indonesian authorities said the crew reported encountering bad weather during the last communication with the ship.
Search and rescue teams are continuing efforts to locate the vessel and rescue the remaining passengers.
