Election Commission Responds to Propaganda, Defends its Legal and Constitutional Role

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has expressed strong disapproval of the ongoing baseless propaganda against it following the Supreme Court’s recent verdict, stating that attempts to blame the Commission for political failures are unjust and inappropriate.

In a press release issued by the Election Commission, it was emphasized that the criticism directed towards the ECP is not only false but also contrary to facts. The Commission asserted that it has consistently carried out its duties in line with the Constitution and law of Pakistan.

The statement highlighted that the Supreme Court has validated the ECP’s stance on multiple occasions, including in cases like the Senate elections, where the Court upheld the ECP’s position on the secret ballot. The Commission’s decisions regarding the by-election in Daska were also confirmed by the apex court, which deemed it a constitutional measure. Similarly, the interpretation of intra-party elections by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was upheld by the Court, as was the decision to de-list the All Pakistan Muslim League (APML) for legal violations.

Furthermore, the Election Commission pointed out that other political parties have also faced de-listing due to violations of the law, with the Lahore High Court’s decision regarding the Punjab Election Tribunals being rejected in favor of the ECP’s stance. In the case concerning the Sunni Ittehad Council’s reserved seats, the Commission’s position was similarly upheld.

The ECP reiterated that it does not make decisions under political pressure or public sentiment. All of its decisions are based solely on constitutional mandates, legal frameworks, and concrete evidence. The Commission stated that it remains unfazed by any political party’s tactics or interests and reaffirmed its commitment to impartiality and upholding the rule of law.

In conclusion, the Election Commission of Pakistan called for a more constructive approach, advising against shifting the blame for political setbacks onto an institution that works within the legal framework of the country.
