Heatwaves Linked to Rising Stress, Anxiety and Mental Fatigue, Experts Reveal

Islamabad (KNN) — Prolonged heatwaves are not only affecting physical health but are also significantly impacting mental and emotional well-being, experts have warned.
According to medical specialists, continuous exposure to high temperatures is leading to increased irritability, anxiety, fatigue, stress, and sleep disturbances among the population.
Health experts explained that during extreme heat, the human body constantly works to regulate temperature, which results in physical exhaustion and mental strain. Excessive sweating, discomfort, and lack of restful sleep further negatively affect mood and tolerance levels.
Doctors noted that poor sleep during hot weather is a major contributor to anxiety and emotional distress, as many individuals experience frequent awakenings or insufficient rest, leading to mental fatigue and reduced concentration.
Dehydration also plays a key role in affecting brain function. During severe heatwaves, reduced water intake can cause headaches, weakness, irritability, rapid heartbeat, and feelings of panic, all of which intensify psychological stress.
Experts further highlighted that extreme heat often forces people to stay indoors, reducing physical activity and social interaction. This isolation can increase feelings of sadness, loneliness, and depression, particularly among individuals already suffering from anxiety or mood disorders.
Health professionals have advised the public to stay well-hydrated, rest in cool environments, reduce caffeine intake, and engage in light exercise during cooler parts of the day. Breathing exercises, meditation, and limiting screen time can also help maintain mental calm during extreme weather conditions.
