PMD Warns of Dangerous Smog Levels in Major Cities, Issues Health Advisory

Islamabad: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an advisory warning of a significant increase in smog levels across major cities in the coming days.

According to the PMD, stable weather conditions are expected to contribute to the accumulation of harmful pollutants in the atmosphere. Smog— a mixture of smoke and fog— typically intensifies from November to mid-December, and this year could see dangerous levels across Pakistan’s major urban centers.

The department noted that a combination of industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and favorable weather patterns may lead to higher levels of air pollution. Stagnant winds, low temperatures, and humidity will prevent pollutants from dispersing, further worsening the situation.

The PMD warned that rising smog levels could pose serious health risks, including respiratory illnesses, asthma, and other pollution-related health problems. Children, the elderly, and individuals with pre-existing medical conditions are particularly vulnerable.

The department further cautioned that poor air quality could reduce visibility on roads, increasing the risk of traffic accidents. Punjab’s major cities are expected to be among the most affected regions.
