Lahore High Court Orders Strict Measures to Combat Smog Crisis

Lahore — The Lahore High Court has directed the government to take serious and immediate steps to control the worsening smog situation in the city.
During the hearing of petitions related to smog control, various government departments submitted their reports before the court. The Parks and Horticulture Authority also presented rules regarding tree transplantation.
The court instructed the Judicial Water Commission to review its existing rules and propose necessary amendments to improve environmental management.
Justice Shahid Karim observed that non-native trees are harming Lahore’s environment, adding that smog accumulated over the entire year intensifies within a single month, undermining year-round efforts.
In response, the Judicial Water Commission informed the court that a plan to cut down **11,000 trees** has been halted.
The court further noted that air pollution in the country has reached dangerous levels and directed authorities to also seek recommendations from World Wide Fund for Nature.
The Lahore High Court has ordered the government to implement effective anti-smog measures and submit compliance reports at the next hearing.
