Daily Multivitamins May Slow Aging Process, New Study Suggests

Islamabad: Recent research indicates that taking daily multivitamins may help significantly slow down the aging process. The study, published in the scientific journal Nature Medicine, found that older adults who took daily multivitamin supplements for two years experienced the effects of aging roughly four months slower than those who did not take supplements.

According to the study’s co-author, researchers aimed not only to understand how people can live longer but also how they can live healthier, better-quality lives. While it is too early to directly link these findings to medical outcomes, the results over the two-year period indicate a positive trend.

Study Details: Scientists analyzed blood samples from 958 healthy individuals over the age of 70. To estimate biological age, researchers examined five epigenetic clocks—biomarkers that measure molecular patterns of DNA methylation at specific genomic sites. These markers naturally change with age, either increasing or decreasing predictably.

Findings: The study revealed that daily multivitamin use significantly slowed aging markers in 2 out of the 5 epigenetic clocks, which may also be related to mortality risk. While the effects on biological aging are modest, experts like Steve Horvath, a leading researcher in aging, described the findings as highly promising, highlighting the consistency across epigenetic clocks that scientists had anticipated.

This research provides some of the most reliable evidence yet on whether everyday supplements can meaningfully influence the aging process.
