Ramadan: Key Precautions for Patients with Gastric Problems

Islamabad: During the holy month of Ramadan, patients suffering from gastritis or peptic ulcers need to take special precautions while observing fasts, health experts advise.

According to medical professionals, such stomach conditions may develop due to bacterial infections, smoking, prolonged use of painkillers, overeating, and excessive consumption of spicy, oily, or acidic foods.

Common symptoms include stomach pain, heartburn, bloating, burping, acidity, and burning or pain in the upper abdomen. Prolonged fasting can sometimes worsen these symptoms, making it difficult for some individuals to continue fasting.

Important Considerations Before Fasting

Experts recommend that the decision to fast should depend on the severity of the patient’s condition. Skipping Suhoor (pre-dawn meal) can increase acidity, so it is important not to miss it. Avoiding tea and other caffeinated beverages at Suhoor is advised, as they may cause dehydration and aggravate stomach irritation.

Breaking the fast slowly helps protect the stomach from sudden acidity. Starting with dates and water is considered beneficial, while light soups or mild fruit drinks can also support digestion.

At Iftar, a balanced meal including carbohydrates, protein, vegetables, and fruits is recommended. Fried, heavily spiced, overly salty, and very sweet foods should be avoided.

Foods to Avoid

Fatty, fried, and highly spicy foods, along with sour items and citrus fruits such as lemons, oranges, and grapefruit, may worsen symptoms for gastric patients. Processed, canned foods and sugary items can also aggravate discomfort.

Smoking is a major cause of gastritis and ulcers, and experts suggest using Ramadan as an opportunity to quit.

Better Food Choices

Foods such as dates, bananas, and almonds are relatively gentle on the stomach and provide energy. Boiled or baked foods are healthier alternatives to fried items.

Importance of Water and Medication

Drinking adequate water between Iftar and bedtime is essential to prevent dehydration. Stomach medications are generally recommended at Suhoor, as advised by a doctor.

Experts conclude that light, balanced, and moderate meals, sufficient hydration, and proper meal timing can help gastric patients observe Ramadan fasting with greater ease.
