Trump Rescinds Federal Support for Electric Vehicle Sales in Major Executive Order Rollback

Washington:On his first day back in the White House, President Donald Trump, amid a flurry of executive orders, announced on Monday that he would withdraw federal support for electric vehicle (EV) sales as part of a sweeping reversal of policies from the Biden administration.
Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at the Capital One Arena, President Trump emphasized that America would not undermine its own industries, especially while China continues to pollute without restraint. The President signed executive orders in front of a roaring audience, one of which included the cancellation of 78 actions from the Biden era.
Among these 78 actions was a 2021 executive order aimed at making half of all new cars sold by 2030 electric vehicles. While the target did not impose mandatory industry regulations, it had garnered significant support from major automakers.
Dan Becker, Director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign at the Center for Biological Diversity, criticized the rollback, stating that these measures would burden Americans with higher prices, more pollution, and weakened competition. “Our children and everyone suffering from lung diseases will pay the price for these politically motivated rollbacks on climate protections,” Becker added.
Trump’s executive orders were part of his broader promise to undo environmental regulations introduced by former President Joe Biden, particularly those that supported American manufacturers of gasoline-powered vehicles. The order also promised to reverse the vehicle emissions standards set by the Biden administration last spring, which Trump referred to as the “EV mandate,” despite the fact that it did not directly mandate the production of electric vehicles.
