Do Not Turn Parliament into a Means for Forgiveness of Sins, Says Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai

**Islamabad:** Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai has warned against using Parliament as a tool for bypassing justice or rectifying past wrongs, emphasizing that the sanctity of the constitution lies in a people-elected legislature.

Speaking in the National Assembly, Achakzai questioned why past decisions regarding Afghan children’s citizenship, recommended unanimously by the Mushahid Hussain and Wasim Sajjad committee during Nawaz Sharif’s tenure, are being undermined today. “The way Afghan nationals were expelled—does this reflect humanity? Those whom Parliament promised rights are now being left without protection,” he stated.

He urged lawmakers to stop undermining Parliament through amendments and stressed that democracy and the constitution should guide the nation instead of pushing it toward civil unrest. “Anyone who respects the constitution is fighting for the country’s survival,” he added.

Achakzai also reflected on historical struggles, saying, “When Baloch, Pashtun, and other courageous tribes fought inch by inch against the British, some people joined the colonial forces and fought against their own. We do not boast, but we demand our rights.”

He emphasized that governance should be equitable, reflecting the rights of Pashtun, Baloch, Sindhi, Punjabi, and Saraiki populations. Regarding relations with Afghanistan, he noted, “During the 1965 and 1971 wars, Afghanistan did not betray Pakistan. It is time to abandon the notion of a ‘fifth province’ and build friendship based on equality.”

Achakzai concluded by underlining the importance of parliamentary authority: “The source of power must be Parliament. Until the value of the people’s vote is recognized, the country cannot progress.”
