Japan’s Ruling Coalition Secures Two-Thirds Majority in Snap Parliamentary Elections

TOKYO: Japan’s ruling coalition has won a decisive victory in the country’s snap parliamentary elections, securing a two-thirds majority, according to official media exit polls.

Voting for the 465 seats of the lower house of Japan’s parliament was held on Sunday. The conservative ruling coalition, led by Japan’s first female prime minister Sanae Takaichi, emerged victorious in the elections.

Exit polls released by Japanese state media showed that the ruling alliance won 323 seats, comfortably achieving a two-thirds majority in parliament.

Following the landslide win, the prospects of Sanae Takaichi continuing as prime minister have brightened, while the strong majority is expected to make legislation easier for the government.

It is worth noting that the 64-year-old Sanae Takaichi became prime minister in October after being elected leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Prime Minister Takaichi has pledged to cut the sales tax by 8 percent to curb inflation and has also promised to increase military spending.
