Denmark and Greenland Seek Direct Talks with U.S. After Trump’s Greenland Remarks

*Islamabad:* Recent statements from the Trump administration regarding Greenland have caused unease among European nations and NATO allies, prompting Denmark and Greenland to request direct discussions with U.S. officials.

According to the Associated Press (AP), Denmark and Greenland have formally requested a meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The White House reiterated that the U.S. military could remain “an option” regarding Greenland, reflecting President Donald Trump’s longstanding stance on controlling the territory.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that any attempt by the U.S. to seize Greenland would be equivalent to undermining NATO. European defense analyst Maria Martiseviute described Trump’s rhetoric as threatening the sovereignty of an allied nation.

Greenland’s Prime Minister also rejected U.S. claims, stating that the island is not for sale. Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark and, by extension, part of NATO. Leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom issued a joint statement supporting Greenland’s sovereignty and emphasizing that any pressure or coercion would violate NATO’s fundamental principles.

Trump has argued for U.S. control over Greenland to safeguard security interests amid growing Chinese and Russian activities in the Arctic. Recent U.S. military actions in Venezuela have further heightened European concerns.

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Vivian Motzfeld confirmed they have formally requested a meeting with Rubio in the near future, though similar past requests have not succeeded. U.S. Senate NATO observer group leaders also criticized Trump’s statements, urging the U.S. to honor its treaty commitments. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot added that during a phone call with Rubio, any possibility of a Venezuela-style military operation in Greenland was firmly rejected.
