Balochistan Gripped by Intense Cold Wave as Temperatures Drop Below Freezing in Several Regions

Quetta :Northern and upper districts of Balochistan have come under the grip of a severe cold wave, with temperatures in several areas plunging well below the freezing point. The Meteorological Department reports that persistent cold winds have intensified winter conditions across the province, and the weather is expected to remain dry and extremely cold over the next 24 hours.
According to the Met Office, Quetta recorded a minimum temperature of **0°C**, while the mercury in Kalat dropped to **-1°C**. In Ziarat and upper parts of Quetta, the cold has been more intense, with temperatures reaching as low as **-5°C**, severely affecting daily life. Residents, especially during early morning and late-night hours, are facing significant difficulties.
In Zhob, the minimum temperature was recorded at **5°C**, while the cold wave also persisted across the plains. Temperatures in other districts remained low, with **Sibi at 13°C**, **Turbat at 15°C**, **Nokkundi at 8°C**, and **Chaman at 4°C**. These readings reflect a sharp drop compared to last week.
Coastal districts were also affected by chilly winds, with Gwadar recording **14°C** and Jiwani **17°C**. With the intensifying cold, residents have increased their use of warm clothing and hot beverages.
Meteorologists warn that over the next 24 hours, cold conditions are likely to worsen in Ziarat, Kalat, Pishin, Muslim Bagh, Quetta, and surrounding valleys, with temperatures expected to drop even further.
Doctors have advised the public to take precautionary measures amid the severe cold. Health experts recommend:
* Wearing warm clothing—jackets, socks, gloves, caps—especially during mornings and nights.
* Ensuring children and the elderly are dressed adequately for the cold.
* Maintaining proper ventilation in rooms using gas or coal heaters to prevent suffocation incidents.
* Not reducing water intake, as dry cold weather increases the risk of skin and respiratory diseases.
Experts also suggest consuming soups, tea, honey, ginger, warm milk, and dry fruits to strengthen immunity. Patients with asthma, heart conditions, and elderly individuals are advised to avoid exposure to cold winds, as respiratory illnesses tend to increase during harsh winters.
The Meteorological Department and medical specialists have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and strictly follow weather-related precautions.
