Judiciary’s Unity Crucial to Preserve Its Independence, Justice Mansoor Writes to Chief Justice on 27th Amendment

Islamabad: Supreme Court Judge **Justice Mansoor Ali Shah** has written another letter to **Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi** regarding the **27th Constitutional Amendment**, urging immediate consultation between the judiciary and the executive before any constitutional changes are made.

In his letter, Justice Mansoor emphasized that *“no constitutional amendment can be implemented without formal consultation with the judges of the constitutional courts.”* He advised the Chief Justice to take the lead as both the **head and guardian** of the judiciary, stressing that *“this is a moment that demands leadership.”*

Justice Mansoor proposed convening a **convention of judges from all constitutional courts**, including the **Supreme Court, High Courts, and Federal Shariat Court**, to formulate a collective judicial stance. He further recommended that the judiciary’s institutional position be **formally communicated to the government and parliament**, and that the government be informed not to move forward with the amendment until consultations are complete.

Highlighting the stakes, he warned, *“If the judiciary does not remain united, both its independence and its decisions will be compromised. History remembers those who stand for the Constitution, not those who remain silent.”*

Justice Mansoor clarified that his letter was *“not a note of dissent but an appeal for institutional solidarity,”* asserting that *“silence on constitutional matters violates the spirit of the judicial oath.”* He concluded by emphasizing that *“protecting an independent and dignified judiciary for future generations is the shared responsibility of all.”*
