Opposition Demands Joint Parliamentary Session on Afghanistan Tensions; Warns Federal Government Against Interference in KP Affairs
Islamabad: The opposition alliance *Tehreek Tahafuz-e-Aeen Pakistan (TTAP)* has called for an **immediate joint session of Parliament** to discuss the escalating tensions with Afghanistan and take the nation into confidence on the government’s strategy.
In a statement issued after a high-level meeting chaired by **Mahmood Khan Achakzai** at **Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar’s residence in Islamabad**, the alliance strongly condemned the **federal government’s alleged interference** in the constitutional process of government transition in **Khyber Pakhtunkhwa**, warning that any unconstitutional move would be the sole responsibility of the federal authorities.
The alliance expressed deep concern over the **Pakistan-Afghanistan border situation**, endorsing the **position of Saudi Arabia** and urging both neighboring countries to resolve their issues through dialogue and mutual understanding.
The TTAP’s statement termed recent remarks by federal ministers regarding the KP chief minister’s election as **unwarranted intrusion into provincial matters**, asserting that the **selection of a new chief minister is the constitutional and democratic right of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)**. It warned that any unconstitutional interference could further complicate the province’s already fragile security situation.
The opposition bloc also **criticized the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision** to declare provincial assembly members “independent” ahead of the chief minister’s election, calling it an act that **facilitates horse-trading** and undermines democratic integrity.
Expressing concern over the deteriorating **law and order situation in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa**, the alliance urged the federal and provincial governments to **formulate an effective counterterrorism strategy** in consultation with local communities.
Prominent participants in the meeting included **Sultan Akram Raja**, **Asad Qaiser**, **Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar**, **former Sindh Governor Muhammad Zubair**, **Allama Ahmed Iqbal Rizvi**, **Sajid Tareen**, and **Zain Shah**.
The statement concluded with a call for **national unity and constitutional supremacy**, emphasizing that Pakistan’s stability depends on respect for democratic processes and provincial autonomy.
