Is Finland Preparing to Recognize Palestinian State Amid Growing European Support?

HELSINKI: Following a wave of recognitions from several European nations, Finland is now signaling possible support for Palestinian statehood, raising speculation that it may officially join the list of countries acknowledging Palestine as a sovereign state.

According to international media, Israel has been losing allies since the Gaza war began, with global outrage over relentless bombardments and the deliberate imposition of famine. European countries are increasingly recognizing Palestine, heightening fears of Israel’s international isolation.

Spain, Norway, and several other states have already recognized Palestine, while France and the UK have also declared support for Palestinian statehood. Recently, Finland joined an international declaration, led by France and Saudi Arabia, calling for a peaceful resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict under a two-state solution.

Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen stated on social media platform X that this represents the most significant global initiative for a two-state solution in years. The Finnish Foreign Ministry described the step as an “important development toward lasting peace in the region.”

The declaration emerged from a UN conference co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia in July. Many Western countries, including France, reiterated their commitment to Palestinian recognition at the recent UN General Assembly.

While Finland’s coalition government remains divided and has not yet formally recognized Palestine, analysts suggest the country may follow the path of other European nations in the near future.
