Pakistan Economic Survey Released Ahead of Federal Budget 2025-26

ISLAMABAD – The federal government is set to present the Economic Survey for the outgoing fiscal year today, just a day ahead of the announcement of the Federal Budget 2025-26, scheduled for June 10. The National Assembly Speaker, Ayaz Sadiq, has approved the full budget session schedule.

According to the finalized Economic Survey, Pakistan’s economy grew by 2.68% in the current fiscal year, missing the provisional target of 3.6%. The total size of the economy increased by \$39.3 billion, reaching \$410.96 billion compared to \$371.66 billion last year. Per capita income rose by \$144 to \$1,680, while the overall economy in rupee terms expanded by Rs 9.6 trillion to Rs 114.7 trillion from Rs 105.1 trillion.

In the agriculture sector, overall growth was recorded at just 0.56% against the target of 2%. Major crops experienced a sharp decline of -13.49% against the target of -4.5%, while cotton ginning plummeted by -19% compared to a -2.3% target. However, livestock grew by 4.72%, surpassing its 3.8% goal.

Industrial sector growth stood at 4.77% versus a target of 4.4%. Large-scale manufacturing fell by -1.53%, but small industries grew by 8.81%, exceeding their 8.2% target. Electricity, gas, and water supply surged by 28.88%, far above the 2.5% target.

The construction sector recorded a 6.61% growth (target: 5.5%), while services grew by 2.91% (target: 4.1%). Wholesale and retail trade barely increased by 0.14% (target: 4.1%), and hotels and restaurants grew by 4.06%.

Information and communication services grew by 6.48% (target: 5.7%), while financial and insurance activities expanded by 5.7% (target: 3.22%). Education and health also exceeded targets, with education at 4.43% (target: 3.5%) and health at 3.71% (target: 3.2%).

The National Assembly’s schedule for the federal budget begins on June 13 with a debate on the proposed budget. Discussions on demands, grants, and cut motions will be held on June 24-25. The Finance Bill will be approved on June 26, and supplementary grants will be reviewed on June 27. No sessions will be held on June 11, 12, and 22.
