Medical Report Confirms SP Adeel Akbar Had Dengue Before Death; Probe Points to Accidental Firing

ISLAMABAD:The medical report and leave application of **SP Adeel Akbar**, who died in a suspected accidental shooting, have surfaced — confirming that the senior officer had been diagnosed with dengue fever days before his death.

According to official documents, SP Adeel Akbar tested **positive for dengue** after a check-up at Polyclinic Hospital on **October 20**, following which he applied for **three days of medical leave**, which was duly approved by the **DIG Islamabad**. Sources said Akbar **resumed duty on October 23** after recovery.

Police sources revealed that Adeel Akbar had recently secured admission to a **foreign university** and had visited the **Foreign Office** to verify his educational documents. Investigators believe there is a **strong possibility that the SMG (sub-machine gun) went off accidentally.**

Forensic experts noted that the gunshot was fired at a **65-degree angle**, suggesting an **accidental discharge**, as PSP officers are generally **not highly trained in handling SMGs.**

According to preliminary investigations, the **driver and operator present in the vehicle** at the time of the incident have been taken into custody. Police are examining **call records** and **in-car conversations** to determine why Adeel Akbar asked for the weapon and under what circumstances it was handed to him.

In his initial statement, the operator said that while they were on their way to the **Establishment Division**, SP Adeel Akbar received a **phone call at 4:23 PM** and instructed the driver to go to the **Foreign Office** for document attestation. After returning to the car, he received another call and then **asked for the gun**, reportedly to check if it was functional.

The operator stated that he **removed the magazine** before handing the weapon over, but upon SP Akbar’s request, he **reinserted it** after confirming it contained **50 rounds**. Moments later, a shot was fired from the **back seat**, hitting SP Akbar in the **forehead** and exiting through the back of his head — killing him instantly.

Police immediately rushed the officer to **PIMS Hospital**, but he was declared dead on arrival.

Islamabad IG **Ali Nasir Rizvi** confirmed that both the operator and gunman remain **in custody**, and the case is being thoroughly investigated. He added that SP Adeel Akbar was **scheduled to take a scholarship test abroad** and had recently been **promoted to SP (Islam Division)**.

He further disclosed that Adeel’s brother **Hassan** had met him a day before the incident and spent the entire day together. Investigators are now reviewing his **movements and call data** from that day.

The **funeral prayers** for SP Adeel Akbar were held in his **native village Mari Thakran**, attended by senior police officials including the **IG Islamabad** and the **CPO Gujranwala**.
