Non-Governmental Legal Representatives Included in Law and Justice Commission: Public and Stakeholder Participation Ensured

Islamabad: The Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan, under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, has decided to include non-governmental representatives from the legal community in its proceedings. The move aims to enhance public input and stakeholder participation in the legislative process.
During a recent meeting of the Commission, Chief Justice Afridi informed the participants of a significant change in the Commission’s structure. For the first time, members of the legal fraternity who are not part of the judiciary have been officially included in the Commission’s activities.
According to the official statement, participants emphasized the importance of regular meetings and acknowledged the key role the Commission plays in shaping legislation. They also stressed the need to expand the Commission’s research scope by incorporating broader legislative proposals.
Chief Justice Afridi highlighted the importance of gradual progress on the Commission’s research agenda. The meeting was attended by prominent legal figures including Khawaja Haris Ahmed, Fazal Haq Abbasi, Kamran Murtaza, Muhammad Munir Paracha, and Ahmad Farooq Khattak.
A consultative committee, headed by the Secretary of the Ministry of Law, has been formed to review existing laws. The committee includes Khawaja Haris Ahmed, Muhammad Munir Paracha, and Kamran Murtaza. Terms of Reference (ToRs) for the committee have also been finalized.
Justice Afridi noted that previously, non-governmental members of the Commission were typically retired judges from the higher judiciary. The inclusion of practicing legal professionals now marks a significant shift toward broader engagement and transparency.
