Sindh Government Accelerates Efforts to Integrate Online Taxi Services and Launch EV Taxis in Karachi

Karachi: The Sindh government has decided to expedite efforts to bring all online taxi services operating in Karachi under a unified regulatory framework and to launch an electric vehicle (EV) taxi service in the city.
The decision was made during a key meeting of the Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Department chaired by Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon. Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Investment and Public-Private Partnership, Qasim Naveed Qamar, also attended the meeting along with Transport Secretary Asad Zamin and Sindh Mass Transit Authority MD Kamal Dayo.
The meeting reviewed the progress on establishing new motor vehicle inspection centers and assessed the performance of existing centers in Karachi. Different models were discussed to provide EV taxis to the public on easy installments. The provision of scooters to working women and female students was also examined.
Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon emphasized that providing high-quality, safe, and environmentally friendly transport services to Karachi residents is a top priority for the Sindh government. He stated that the launch of the EV taxi service would not only enhance the city’s transport system but also significantly reduce environmental pollution.
He added that all taxi services would be streamlined under one system to ensure safe, standardized, and legally compliant travel for passengers. This move will help improve fare regulation, service standards, and vehicle inspection procedures.
To empower women, the government will initially distribute 1,000 pink scooters free of cost to working women and students. Fast-track steps are being taken to facilitate this initiative.
Minister Memon also shared that traditional buses operating in Karachi would gradually be shifted to other districts, and the city’s entire bus system will transition to electric buses. Double-decker buses are expected to arrive in Karachi by June this year, with a large fleet of new buses likely to follow by late June or early July.
Work is also underway to establish EV charging stations, parking, and other necessary infrastructure in Karachi. In the upcoming fiscal budget, the government aims to allocate significant funds for the procurement of new buses.
Qasim Naveed Qamar reiterated the government’s commitment to attracting both local and international investors to the transport sector and assured full support and facilities for potential investors.
