Punjab Orders Disposal of Cases of Under-Trial Prisoners Detained for Over Three Years Within Two Months

LAHORE: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Justice Aalia Neelum has ordered that cases involving accused persons who have remained in custody for more than three years be decided within two months.

Following the chief justice’s directions, letters have been issued to the sessions judges of 28 districts of Punjab, instructing them to hear such cases on a fast-track basis.

Justice Aalia Neelum directed that cases involving under-trial prisoners detained for more than three years be taken up on a priority basis and decided within two months.

All sessions judges across Punjab will be required to ensure that the cases are disposed of within the stipulated timeframe.

The Lahore High Court chief justice has also sought implementation reports regarding cases involving accused persons who have remained in custody for more than three years.

The directive aims to eliminate unnecessary delays and prolonged adjournments in the judicial process and ensure timely decisions in cases involving long-term under-trial prisoners.
