Four Common Causes of Premature Gray Hair

Islamabad: While graying hair is a natural part of aging, experts say it can also occur at a young age due to a variety of health and lifestyle factors.
Hair gradually loses its natural color as people age because the activity of melanin-producing cells in the hair follicles declines over time. However, premature graying may be linked to several underlying causes.
One of the most common factors is chronic stress. Research suggests that prolonged stress may affect the cells responsible for hair pigmentation. Managing stress may help slow or, in some cases, partially reverse stress-related changes in hair color.
Another possible cause is autoimmune disorders, in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells, including those involved in maintaining hair pigmentation, potentially leading to early graying.
A vitamin B12 deficiency is also associated with premature gray hair. Vitamin B12 plays an important role in the production of healthy red blood cells, which supply oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, including the hair follicles. Low levels of the vitamin can weaken hair health and contribute to early loss of pigment.
Smoking has also been linked to premature graying. Studies have found that smokers are more likely to develop gray hair before the age of 30. Tobacco use can reduce blood flow to hair follicles by narrowing blood vessels, while harmful chemicals in tobacco may damage hair roots and accelerate pigment loss.
Medical experts advise that individuals experiencing sudden or premature graying should consult a healthcare professional, as it may sometimes indicate an underlying nutritional deficiency or medical condition.
