Karachi Court Awards Double Death Sentence to Main Accused in Murad Abbas Murder Case After Seven Years

Karachi: A local court in Karachi has sentenced the main accused, Atif Zaman, to two death penalties in the 2019 murder case of television anchor Murad Abbas and Khizar Hayat, nearly seven years after the incident.
The court also imposed a total fine of Rs1 million on Atif Zaman following the conclusion of the trial.
In addition, the court issued permanent arrest warrants for the second accused, Adil Zaman, who has been absconding since his bail application was rejected. He had previously been declared a proclaimed offender.
During the proceedings, the prosecution presented documentary evidence and witness testimony against the accused. After hearing the arguments, the court found Atif Zaman guilty of the murders of both Murad Abbas and Khizar Hayat.
According to the judgment, Atif Zaman received a separate death sentence for each murder, along with the financial penalty.
The incident took place on July 9, 2019, in Karachi’s Defence area. According to police and court records, a dispute over business dealings allegedly led Atif Zaman and his brother Adil Zaman to open fire, resulting in the deaths of television anchor Murad Abbas and Khizar Hayat.
