Lahore High Court Adjourns Hearing on 26th Constitutional Amendment Petition Indefinitely

Lahore: The Lahore High Court has adjourned the hearing on a petition seeking to annul the 26th Constitutional Amendment indefinitely. Chief Justice Aalia Neelam remarked that a similar petition has already been filed in the Supreme Court.
The petition was filed by citizen Nazir Ahmed Chaudhry, who contended that the 26th Amendment violates the preamble of the Constitution of Pakistan. He argued that the amendment undermines the principle of seniority and imposes restrictions on the independence of the judiciary.
According to the petition, the inclusion of members of the assembly and ministers in the Judicial Commission threatens the autonomy of the judiciary. The petitioner requested the court to declare the 26th Constitutional Amendment null and void.
In light of the existing Supreme Court petition, the Chief Justice ordered that the hearing be postponed indefinitely.
