PTI Considers Conditional Support for 28th Constitutional Amendment, Links Decision to Imran Khan’s Release

ISLAMABAD:Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has reportedly decided to conditionally support the proposed 28th Constitutional Amendment, with a majority of parliamentary party members favouring the move if party founder Imran Khan is released, according to sources.
The decision was reportedly discussed during a parliamentary party meeting that lasted eight hours. Following the meeting, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan briefed the media on the party’s position regarding the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as well as other political and constitutional issues.
Gohar said the parliamentary party unanimously condemned the imposition of governor’s rule and emergency in the province. He maintained that PTI had consistently opposed terrorism and had participated in efforts to combat terrorist groups.
However, he alleged that measures were being taken under the pretext of counterterrorism to weaken or eliminate a political party in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
He said the party had been unable to establish contact with Chief Minister Sohail Afridi since the emergency was imposed. He also expressed concern over the whereabouts of Junaid Akbar Khan, Speaker Babar Saleem Swati and other provincial assembly members.
Gohar further said that Imran Khan’s three sisters remained in jail despite the extension of their detention, while access to the PTI founder had been restricted for more than 375 days.
The PTI chairman demanded an end to governor’s rule, the continuation of counterterrorism operations with cooperation from all provinces, and the public appearance of the chief minister and provincial lawmakers.
He said the party had approached the Supreme Court 19 times and the High Court 25 times without obtaining relief. PTI would continue raising its concerns both inside and outside parliament, he added.
Gohar also said that Mahmood Khan Achakzai and Allama Nasir had been given a mandate by Imran Khan to engage in negotiations and dialogue.
## PTI Reaffirms Support for Imran Khan’s Leadership
Senior PTI leader Asad Qaiser read out a resolution adopted by the parliamentary party, reaffirming its unwavering commitment to Imran Khan, his leadership, decisions and vision for Pakistan.
The resolution stated that the party would continue supporting Khan’s struggle for democracy, constitutional supremacy, justice and public rights.
It also pledged to continue the political struggle with determination until these objectives were achieved.
## Demand for Immediate Release of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi
The resolution demanded the immediate release of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in accordance with legal requirements.
It called for unrestricted meetings between Imran Khan and his family, lawyers and authorised party representatives, as well as restoration of his rights to communicate and meet visitors.
The parliamentary party also demanded full implementation of the Supreme Court’s August 2026 directives concerning Khan’s medical care. These included an independent medical examination, treatment at Shifa International Hospital and the involvement of his personal physician.
The resolution expressed serious concern over restrictions on meetings with the former prime minister and the arrangements for his medical treatment, calling for full protection of his health, dignity and legal rights.
## PTI Rejects Emergency and Governor’s Rule in KP
The resolution strongly condemned the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, describing the measures as an attack on provincial autonomy and the federal principles enshrined in the Constitution.
It demanded the immediate withdrawal of both measures and restoration of the elected provincial government under Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
The party also called for the immediate release of Afridi, Provincial Assembly Speaker Babar Saleem Swati and PTI provincial president Junaid Akbar Khan.
It rejected the establishment of an unelected advisory council and any arrangement transferring the powers of the elected provincial government to bodies without separate constitutional authority.
The resolution further expressed concern over arrests, raids and restrictions targeting PTI’s elected leadership, party organisations and workers in the name of counterterrorism.
It stated that the fight against terrorism must not be used as a justification for political revenge or the removal of an elected provincial government. Such measures, it warned, could deepen feelings of deprivation among the provinces and damage federal relations, repeating mistakes previously witnessed in Balochistan.
## Condemnation of Arrests, Raids and Political Cases
The parliamentary party strongly condemned arrests, alleged abductions, raids, harassment and politically motivated cases against PTI leaders, parliamentarians, workers and their family members, particularly in connection with the party’s long march.
It demanded the immediate release of Imran Khan’s sisters, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, Umar Cheema and all other political prisoners and detained workers held under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law.
The resolution also expressed serious concern over the arrests, detention and reported disappearances of PTI members of the National Assembly, including Haji Imtiaz Ahmed Chaudhry, Muhammad Jamal Ahsan Khan, Mian Ghaus Muhammad, Sanaullah Khan Masti Khel, Dawar Khan Kundi, Dr Amjad Ali Khan, Fazal Muhammad Khan, Adil Khan Bazai, Maulana Syed Naseem Ali Shah, Muhammad Zubair Khan Wazir and Junaid Akbar Khan.
The party demanded the immediate release of those it considers unlawfully detained, disclosure of the whereabouts and well-being of missing individuals, access for their families and lawyers, and restoration of their right to participate in parliamentary proceedings.
The resolution also condemned what it described as politically motivated cases and sentences against former opposition leader Umar Ayub Khan, Shibli Faraz and other PTI parliamentarians and officeholders.
It called for transparent judicial proceedings, an effective right of appeal, justice for all affected individuals, an end to unlawful disqualifications and restoration of parliamentary seats.
The party also demanded an end to alleged unlawful arrests, enforced disappearances and misuse of the law against political opponents, lawyers and human rights activists, including Imaan Mazari and Hadi Chatha.
## PTI Condemns Terrorism and Calls for Improved Security
The resolution unequivocally condemned terrorism and all terrorist organisations, expressing grave concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the country.
It acknowledged the sacrifices made by Pakistan’s armed forces, police and civilians in defending the country against terrorism.
At the same time, the parliamentary party strongly criticised what it described as deliberate efforts by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government to create divisions between Imran Khan, PTI and state institutions.
The resolution alleged that PTI’s legitimate democratic and constitutional struggle was being portrayed as hostility towards the state.
The party reiterated its commitment to constitutional and democratic principles while opposing the measures it says are being taken against its leadership and provincial government.
